Meet Joe Hulke, Plato Township Highway Commissioner
Welcome to the Plato Township Highway District's new home on the Web!
I was appointed as Plato Township Highway Commissioner in May of 1999 by the Township Board. I filled the position vacated by the previous Highway Commissioner who left office in April 1999. I was then elected to this position in 2001, and re-elected in 2005. I have lived within a 3 ˝ mile radius of Plato Center my entire life.
My wife Dolly and I have lived in the town of Plato Center for the last 35 years. We have two children who are both married. Our daughter Heather and her husband Kent have given us three grandchildren, Cod, Cheyenne and Colton. Our son Brent and his wife Stephanie have given us two grandchildren, Annabelle and Hunter.
My main concern is to continue to improve on all the Township’s roads. As of the fall of 2006, 85% of all Township roads or streets have been resurfaced with blacktop. All of the gravel roads have been eliminated. I am the first Road Commissioner who has established a 5 year road resurfacing program. This has been very well accepted by the homeowners. They now will know what roads will be projected to be resurfaced in the next 5 years.
The township’s residents' tax dollars are spent on many projects. Some of the responsibilities of the Highway District include snow plowing, patching of roadways, and maintaining all of the signs on the township roads, many of which have been replaced. Our duties also include drainage issues, mowing of roadsides 3 times a year, striping of highways, removal of dead animals along the road ditches and much more.
Plato Township is responsible for 49.7 miles of roadway at this time. As Elgin continues to grow our Township miles will be decreasing.
