| On September 8, ComEd assigned crews to de-energize and shield the power lines above the bridge. This action was necessary to protect the power lines, allowing the crane to be safely staged for the demolition process. Crews will begin by lifting the two southernmost sections of the bridge one at a time from the south end. After this step is completed, the crane will be moved to the north end to remove the final three sections. On September 9, Nichols Crane set up the crane needed to remove the bridge deck sections. This followed a considerable wait for ComEd to provide crews to shield the nearby power lines. The shielding was required because the crane’s operational radius and clearance are located very close to the power lines. This precaution helps reduce the risk of electrical accidents during the bridge removal operation. |
